Most
people take modern weather
forecasting for granted.
We depend on accurate
information from forecasters
for making travel plans,
dressing appropriately,
and in cases of extreme
weather, our safety. Unfortunately,
long range predictions
are not very accurate.
In fact 3-day forecasts
are only correct about
a 50% of the time.
In an effort to make
weather prediction more
accurate, researchers
at NASA are developing
a revolutionary new weather
satellite called the Geostationary
Imaging Fourier Transform
Spectrometer, or GIFTS.
GIFTS will provide data
that will be up to 1000
times more accurate that
current satellite information.
Jennifer Pulley spoke
with Dr. Bill Smith at
NASA Langley Research
Center to find out more.
