Behind the Scenes

program 5 imageAlthough most of us don't like to think about it, the thought of crashing creeps into almost every passenger's mind when boarding a plane. Air travel is the safest form of transportation known to man. In fact, statistically you would have to fly once everyday for more than 8,200 years before you would be involved in a fatal aircraft accident. Fortunately, NASA operates a unique facility called the Impact Dynamics Research Facility or IDRF, to research and conduct crash testing of full-scale aircraft. The knowledge learned here is making air travel safer in the unlikely event of an accident. Destination Tomorrow spoke with Lisa Jones at NASA Langley Research Center to find out about this one of a kind facility.
