For
over 60 years the helicopter
has been one of the most
versatile types of vehicles
around. They have the
unique ability to fly
forward, backwards, sideways,
rise and descend vertically
and hover motionless in
the air.
Helicopters have been
credited with saving over
3 million lives by transporting
critically wounded people
from accidents and war
zones. They are also used
for helping the police
fight crime, fight forest
fires and for simple tasks
like checking traffic
conditions on our roadways.
But how do how helicopters
fly?

Alonso spoke with NASA
Langley researcher Mike
Watts at the Coast Guard
Air Station Elizabeth
City.
