How It Works

program 2 imageHave you ever slammed the snooze bar on your alarm clock? Opened your garage with a remote control, set your car alarm, or changed the channels on your television with the remote. All these instruments are controlled by sensors! With today's technology most sensors are extremely small or invisible to the eye. Heat, light, sound, pressure, or a particular motion can trigger a sensor to perform a specific action. Sensor technologies have been around for quite some time. In fact, sensors are virtually everywhere. There are sensors in our cars, our homes, intersections, offices, even in our own bodies. But what exactly is a sensor, and how does it work? For some answers correspondent Johnny Alonso spoke with Gary Gibbs, an acoustical engineer at NASA Langley Research Center.
