Behind the Scenes

Since this segment first aired the two Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity have landed on the Red Planet. Although Spirit had a short-lived computer problem, the rest of the mission has proven to be a huge success.

These Rovers are once again changing commonly held beliefs about Mars. Since landing they have been analyzing different rock formations and mineral deposits, which are helping scientists better understand Martian mineralogy.

The Rovers are also taking the most detailed images ever seen of the Martian surface. Tonya St. Romain spoke with Prasun Desai about this amazing achievement.
