Behind the Scenes

Aurora borealis is the scientific name for the northern lights, a celestial phenomenon that has amazed people for centuries. In Latin, aurora borealis translates as the ‘red dawn of the north.’ Although the northern lights are incredible to watch, the particles that make up the auroras are actually a type of electricity that can cause electrical surges and disrupt satellite operations in space and communications here on Earth. To better understand these problems, NASA has been working with researchers and engineers at the Andoya Rocket range in Andennes, Norway. Sophisticated rockets are launched into the atmosphere to collect valuable data that might explain the secrets of the auroras.

Jennifer Pulley spoke with Dr. Sten Odenwall at the Andoya Rocket Range to find out more.
